Isthmus of Misfits

Synopsis

Isthmus of Misfits grew out of a desire to take control of an uninspiring Comm Arts curriculum and a fascination with the local open-mic comics.

Shot originally, entirely on borrowed equipment, the goal was to produce a 15-20 minute short around Madison’s Funniest Comic Competition. But what I found in the interviews, wasn’t excitement for the competition, but a raw passion, and visceral yearning for the stage. As much as I liked to laugh and relate to their sets on stage, I was always most excited for the chance to sit-down with them upstairs and record the very real human stories of these typically struggling artists that had banded together as a community.

Over the last two years, I’ve come to realize this project defined my journey as an artist, much in the same way the developing the Madison open-mic circuit defined theirs. I came in wanting to support them, but left ever-grateful for how they supported me.

This film is both a tribute to these Misfits, for accepting me and inspiring me as one of their own, but more importantly, will hopefully also serve an impassioned plea to Support Art, an inspiration to Make Art, and a lingering reminder of what it means to Be Human, for all who watch it.
