This is the courageous journey of Pamela Hayden, voice of the plucky, resilient Milhouse on “The Simpsons”: After surviving an abusive boarding school and juvenile jail, as well as other setbacks, Pamela now speaks to teen girls about overcoming obstacles and turning their dreams into reality. Her story is told with surprising humor and great candor.
The world-reknowned Simpson’s character, Milhouse, is that kid who is constantly getting knocked down but gets back up. He is the ultimate survivor, resilient, ever optimistic, and for so many of us, very relatable.
Actor Pamela Hayden shares all of these traits…and ,is the actual voice of this endearing character.
My vision was to take the audience on Pamela’s physical, mental and emotional journey of courage, determination and fortitude.
It was very challenging as a director to broach extremely sensitive memories and experiences in Pamela’s life and for her to re-live them, but I felt it was crucial to be true to the story that we were telling.
I know Pamela to be an extremely private person and have rarely heard her talk about her private life in public or in interviews. My desire was to pull back the curtain on her traumatic past in a relatable way to the audience. I strived to accomplish a delicate balance with the emotional core of the film and Pamela’s inherent humor, which is ever present. She is not a victim of her past, but a person who has taken control of her life. By making this film, I feel we can personally touch a broader audience ,most importantly, girls and women who can learn so much from Pamela’s experience.
Pamela reaches out to teens through volunteer work and public speaking often to young people who are facing formidable barriers and at times, hopelessness. Pamela’s life experiences ultimately serve as an uplifting message for people who have ‘fallen through the cracks ‘, as she did.
I feel that presenting her message cinematically through dramatic re-enactments, intimate verite and revealing interviews give audiences an audible and visual reality that will resonate with them.
Her story is one that I hope people will embrace and walk out of the theatre saying, “If she can do it, I can do it.”
