Tildypops

Directed by Tiggy Bayley & Oscar Downing
Narrative Short
United Kingdom | 22 min | 2020

A teenager from South London struggles to lay claim to her selfhood, amid the chaos of her home life with her autistic brother.

The inner trials and revelations of a young girl as she wades through the pain of female adolescence, alongside navigating family dynamics and her brother’s recuperation from addiction issues. Tildypops is an intimate portrayal of a young girl’s experience of dealing with an alcoholic brother who has functional autism. It is a deeply personal story based on my teenage years. I am interested in showing how a family can appear like a bumbling, messy but ultimately happy group of people, while, on the inside, experiencing a lot of pain, hurt and anger. In the film, just as the things reach boiling point they are released with a comedic moment. This constant battle between light and dark also lends itself to Gigi’s trajectory. Think Bridget Jones but for millennials.

Director

Tiggy’s background is in performance. She is a writer and performer from South-West London. She trained at Jacques Lecoq Theatre School in Paris, before obtaining an MA in Liberal Arts at Bristol University. During her time in Bristol, Matilda continued to practise theatre, performing and directing at the Wardrobe, The Room Above Theatre, The Tobacco Factory and The Winston Theatre. Her love of film work evolved and strengthened and she has written and performed in several shorts. In LA she joined an improv troupe to develop her love of comedy. Humour and honesty are integral to her work.

Oscar comes from a background in cinematography. He is passionate cinematographer who has a foundation in engineering and uses his own inventions in his camera work. Oscar moved from Sheffield to London in 2018 to progress his career as a cinematographer. He has shot and animated officially selected short films at festivals such as London Short Film Festival, the People’s Film Festival and Depict. He has also worked on location for Spiderhouse productions for National Geographic. He has also shot and edited several music videos and corporate videos for companies including Crystal Palace F.C. Oscar creates powerful visuals based on his fundamental belief that aesthetic decisions should only ever contribute to the story and never detract from it.
