This short romantic dramedy, my most autobiographical film to date, is based on an unusual blind date I went on in 2005, a night that has haunted me ever since. My goal in making the film was to recreate the events of that evening as closely as I could remember them while also working closely with two of the finest actors in Chicago (Alyssa Thordarson and Mickey O’Sullivan) to ensure that we showed as much compassion as possible to both characters.

Running to Remember - Lauren Johnson

Lauren Johnson

My name is Lauren Johnson and I was a junior in high school when I created “Running to Remember”, a documentary about a gold star mother named Cathy Powers. The first time I heard about Cathy Powers’ story, I learned that she was a runner, like me, and was immediately drawn to her because of this. Prior to taking the Harlem Documentary class, I had no experience in editing or working with video footage of any kind. This did not stop me from conveying Cathy’s story in the best way, working hard to teach others of her amazing accomplishments. “Running To Remember” tells the story of a mother, experiencing ups and downs, love and heartbreak, and her ultimate journey to where she is today.
