Charlie’s Supersonic Glider

Directed by Kate Maberly

Short Narrative
USA | 19 minutes | 2015

Charlie’s is a cruel world. As a baby, he was the only survivor of a horrible car wreck that killed his mother. His Father – once a hero, now an angry drunk – has blamed Charlie ever since. This film depicts the dynamic contrast between a very real, very brutal Father/Son relationship, and the wondrous and beautiful world that exists within a little boy’s imagination.

Charlie's Supersonic Glider - Kate Maberly

Kate Maberly
Writer / Director

Born and raised in Surrey in England Kate Maberly started acting aged 8 landing her first major motion picture role as the star of Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Secret Garden”. Directed by Agnieszka Holland, the film achieved international acclaim and has gone on to become a family classic. Following this success Kate came to the States to take on a number of leading roles which included; ‘Dinah’ in Stephen King’s “The Langoliers” alongside David Morse and Patricia Wettig; and ‘Glumdalclitch’ in “Gulliver’s Travels” with Ted Danson, Kristen Scott Thomas and Mary Steenburgen.

Back in England Kate continued to work on various high caliber Period Dramas for the BBC, including; the Bafta-winning “Anglo-Saxon-Attitudes” with Kate Winslet and Daniel Craig; the Bafta / Golden Globe–winning “The Last of the Blond Bombshells” with Judi Dench and Ian Holm; the Emmy-winning “Victoria & Albert”, the Bafta-winning “Daniel Deronda” directed by Tom Hooper, and the enchanting Hollywood blockbuster “Finding Neverland”, with Johnny Depp and Dustin Hoffman. She took to the stage as Shakespeare’s ‘Juliet’, and then as ‘Mathilde’ in Christopher Hampton’s “Total Eclipse” at the Royal Court Theatre in London, alongside Ben Wishaw and Matthew Macfadyen.

Alongside her work in film Kate achieved double-honors in Classical Piano and Cello from the prestigious London Conservatoire Trinity College of Music. She has composed and produced her own music, including songs for film. Additionally, whilst in college she produced and directed Music videos, utilizing the facilities of the London Film Schools.

In 2015, Kate wrote, produced and directed “Charlie’s Supersonic Glider”, a 20 minute featurette which delves into the heartbreak of hidden abuse crossed with the beauty and impetus of a child’s imagination. Shot in 5 days on location in Oregon, the film is an ambitious cinematic experience designed to demonstrate Kate’s vision, style, and – like one of her most important influences; Spielberg – the power to make even the most brutal of emotional journeys be, ultimately, uplifting.

Candice Carella - PonyCandice Carella
Director, Producer, Writer

After a Southern California childhood revolving around the discipline, form
and rigors of competitive figure skating, Ms. Carella became a painter, studying fine art at UCLA. Her interest in film began when her sculpture teacher screened the German Expressionist film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.”which sparked her interest in film. Wanting to expand her cultural horizons, Ms. Carella learned Italian so she could study art and film in Florence, Italy.

In 2001, while still a student, she began her first experiments with video art. Her video short “Bad Angel,” which was influenced by Chris Marker’s “La Jetee,” was the winner of the Quik film and video festival.

Her first professional experience came working as a wardrobe stylist for music videos and commercials and then costume departments on television shows such as “Sons of Anarchy,” “Revenge,” “Luck,” and “Crossbones;” , “Underground” and on films such as “Constantine,” “Fifty First Dates,” “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Haywire” and many more. In the independent film world, Ms. Carella was costume designer for the feature films “The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down” and “The House of Usher.”

Years of involvement in the filmmaking process from her art and costume perspectives led to Ms. Carella’s realizing that her varied interests were stepping stones to trying her hand at story telling on a larger scale. Realizing that the only way she’d get the opportunity to direct was if she also wrote, produced and financed her own short, she began to write the screenplay and financially plan for the film she wanted to make. She shadowed television and film directors and used her knowledge of compositional style from her time as an artist to storyboard every scene of the film.

Working with seasoned professionals in virtually every key position granted Ms. Carella the maximum learning experience as she wrote, produced and directed her thirty minute short “PONY” which premiered at the Sarasota film festival taking the audience award for “Best Short Film”. Pony has gone on to win 25 awards in categories such as Best Short/ Featurette, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Drama, Best Screenplay, Emerging Filmmaker among others and she won the Emerging Filmmaker Award from the Hollywood Film Festival and Global International Film Awards. This successful maiden effort has inspired her to continue moving forward in filmmaking working on two other shorts and a feature screenplay.
