A small town. Summer in all it’s splendor. Fabrizio is dating Nadia. Both are experiencing the beginnings of adolescence and are ready to have their first sexual encounter. The problem is, they don’t have anywhere to be together. Fabrizio looks for help among his friends. Together they come up with a plan; to buy the neighbor, Don Atilio’s car, which has been out of use for years and abandoned in the street. After great collective effort, they come up with the money that they need.
They bring the car to an isolated field. They transform it into a love-nest with color lights and covered windows. Of course, doing the impossible, so that the adults will never discover it. Something that, sooner or later, will happen.

American Paradise

Directed by Joe Talbot

Narrative Short
USA | 18 min | 2017

Featuring characters from the upcoming Sundance-supported feature-film THE LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANCISCO, AMERICAN PARADISE is the unfortunately true story of Albert Buel, a (very) white man, whose brooding desperation leads him to rob a bank in a hyper-realistic ‘black-guy-mask.’ For Albert, it is not only an attempt to escape his depressed, small-town life; it is way to become someone else. But when the mask won’t come off his face, things go from black to blue.

American Paradise - Joe TalbotJoe Talbot
Director,  Writer

Joe Talbot is a fifth-generation San Franciscan whose emerging body of work has been recognized by beloved auteur Guy Maddin as “gorgeous, powerful and moving.” He received a fellowship to the Sundance Institute’s Screenwriters Lab with his debut feature-film, The Last Black Man in San Francisco (currently in development), and was recently profiled in Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces issue, as among the top new filmmakers to watch. Perhaps most proudly, though, for the lover of Old Hollywood, Talbot’s work has shown at San Francisco’s last two remaining cinema palaces: The Castro Theatre and The Roxie Theatre.
