A Trip To Heaven

Directed by Linh Duong
Narrative Short
Vietnam | 15 min | 2020

During a peculiar tour bus to Mekong Delta, 50-year-old Mdm.Tam bumps into her high school sweetheart. She’s hopeful for a chance of reconciliation, but maybe he’s not.

My obsession with death and the afterlife journey started when I realized how my mother had become so old and fragile. After hearing her regrets, sufferings and unfulfilled wishes in life, I developed this crazy wish where she can get all the happiness she wanted in life whilst her soul is on its journey to heaven.
As I was researching for this film, Mekong River became an important element in this story. Most known as a popular touristic destination in Vietnam, the documentation of the river is my way or memorizing Vietnam and its peculiar mass tourism. I have been to the river at least 4-5 times over the past 10 years, and the tour itself – as we saw in the film – has not changed at all. There was such uncanny resemblances between the tour’s destinations to Vietnamese beliefs of a soul’s journey after death that intertwined together.
Along a muddy river where the souls sail through, around a temple fire where souls are cleansed of their life’s memories, ending it all with a stairway guiding souls towards, perhaps, eternity.

California Dreaming

Directed by Sreylin Meas
Narrative Short
Cambodia | 16 min | 2019

Two women from different backgrounds encounter one another at an oceanfront resort and discover a hidden bond that ties them together, allowing them to escape from their realities.

I”m not to blame for the crimes the generation of my grandparents caused, but it is my duty to absolutely everything that this can never happen again. The story about the fictional character “Anna Friedrich” gives me the freedom to tell the story in a completely creative way that hopefully brings remembrance in film to to a new level. People sadly start to get tired, but we should be more awake than ever before.

Through an impossible encounter between the two, instigated by the director of the film, secrets will unfold that will change their perspectives.

It’s my responsibility as a black man to share the African American experience through my films. But it’s my honor to depict the stories of any underrepresented community on screen.

Sunrise in My Mind

Directed by Danech San
Narrative Short
Cambodia |14 min | 2020

A young woman working late at night at a beauty salon gives into her restrained interest in a young man who spends his evenings driving Phnom Penh’s streets by motorbike as a delivery man.

The opportunity to make films that actually look good is something for which I am extremely grateful. My heartfelt thanks go to my cast, crew, and family who were willing to put up with the whims of a new 19-year-old director.
