Not A Tame Lion

Directed by Craig Bettendorf
Documentary Feature
USA | 118 min | 2022

If the inspiration for the Da Vinci Code’s Robert Langdon were drawn from a single living person, John Boswell would have been the one. Boswell read and translated fourteen ancient and modern languages, became a Yale Professor by age thirty and was granted full access to the highly classified and restricted Vatican archives from which he researched four award winning books, making him a world renowned expert in Medieval History and Linguistics. John Boswell was also openly Gay without apology in an era that was neither tolerant nor accepting.

NOT A TAME LION offers the first-hand accounts of Boswell’s closest friends, students, colleagues and family members as they recount his life, his works and his final days during which he feverishly worked to complete SAME SEX UNIONS IN MEDIEVAL EUROPE a book that changed the trajectory of the Marriage Equality debate, all while privately battling the debilitating effects of AIDS which led to his death on December 24th 1994 at the age of forty-seven.

Greetings from San Diego,
December 24th 2019 marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of Yale Professor John Boswell’s death. Boswell’s many contributions helped shape societies greater acceptance of LGBTQ people in profound ways. With a recent survey concluding that 20% of the millennial population identifies as LGBTQ, Boswell’s work clearly benefited many.

The recent success of LGBTQ themed films truly illustrates the fact that our stories have merit, resonate and are of interest to the broader audience. Marginalized communities need an accurate record of their own voices in order to preserve their history and experience. It is our hope that NOT A TAME LION accomplishes this by recalling the life and works of one of LGBTQ History’s greatest unsung Heroes.

Sincerely,
Craig Bettendorf

Beloved

Directed by Bishrel Mashbat
Narrative Feature
USA | 92 min | 2021

Anar and Kassy fell madly in love and got married. They woke up to a different reality five years later. House chores, routine work, unattainable idealistic dreams, financial struggles, and boredom have replaced the eternal promise of great love. They respond to this situation with panic and have multiple affairs to remind themselves that they are still capable of passion. However, that too passes. Their actions come to light, pushing their commitment to each other to a breaking point. Now they must decide whether to stay or to leave.

Frank McKinney has been one of my closest friends for more than 26 years. We have a lot in common and know similar struggles: sharing the need to be liked, overcoming financial setbacks, searching for acceptance and love from our fathers. Both of us, like many, are on a lifelong search to figure out what success means.
Going in, I thought this would be a movie about rugby. But it grew into something much deeper. Redemption. Purpose. Accountability. Dignity. When you see the players slam into each other—hard enough to make you flinch—the struggle and pain we watch on the field is just puppetry to what they are experiencing and fighting for in their lives. For this underdog team, winning isn’t about championships and trophies.
We started filming this movie before the world knew what COVID-19 was, before the horrific death of George Floyd and the widespread protests against police brutality and racism. These events have shifted the dialogue about race and uncovered inequality that was allowed to function in plain sight. I’m a white male. And race became something that Frank and I talked about in a way that we hadn’t in our 26-year friendship. We have similar struggles, but I will never truly know how difficult it is to be black in a society that actively works to keep African Americans down.
When I see Frank on the green grass of the rugby pitch, I know he’s right where he wants to be. He’s found meaning and purpose as a coach and, strangely, this violent sport has helped to heal the kind of deep wounds that no one can see. I am honored and truly humbled that he has trusted me to tell his story. Directing this movie has showed me how sport can heal, and in the process, I have learned more not only about my friend, but also about myself.

Swing State: The Road to Friendship?

Directed by Bryan Oldenburg
Documentary Feature
USA | 102 min | 2021

America, in general, and Wisconsin, in particular, have seen politics drift to alarming extremes, with cries from one side of “Neo-Fascism,” and cries of “Neo-Marxism” from the other. With the heart seemingly growing cold across the country (perpetuating a vicious cycle of fake news, vile accusations and outright violence), one wonders if the road to friendship is an idealistic concept of a Mayberry long gone. In this sequel to SWING STATE, we literally hit the road to Friendship (a small village in the center of America’s Dairyland), to see if old fashioned neighborliness is still attainable in this deeply fractured nation. We visit a handful of other places along the way (as we did in Part 1 of the Series), including Janesville, Beloit, Mauston and Milwaukee. We meet some outliers, if you will, who counter the philosophy that one side needs to crush the other (as was the case in the first Civil War), and actually strive for meaningful discussion, peace and reconciliation. Sooner or later, we will have to come back together again, in order for America to survive as we know it. In SWING STATE, The Road To Friendship, we witness some authentic attempts at reaching that long-forgotten concept called The Brotherhood of Man.

I’ve lived in the Beloit area all my life and attended Beloit College in the mid-80s (thus making me a “Townie/Gownie,” as the campus affectionately tagged such people). I’ve been interested in politics since my late teenage years, especially the political scene in Chicago (to my South) and Madison (to the North). Election 2016 was really a politico’s dream, with a couple of polarizing candidates, who helped prove, once again, that America’s Dairyland plays an enormous role as a swing state. Interestingly enough, Wisconsin was decided by a razor-thin 22,000 votes—the same amount Green Party candidate, Jill Stein, got. I found it rather odd that Hillary Clinton decided not to visit Wisconsin once during the primaries, and I asked citizens to comment on this fact during interviews.

I started my journey at The Women’s March in Madison, where the atmosphere was predictably electric. The cast of characters (as with all the places in my film) was ideal for documentary filmmaking, both for their passion and intelligence. My goal was to strike a balance between left and right leaning views, as I continued through Beloit, Baraboo, Kenosha, Fond du Lac and Ripon (in the first film) to Janesville, Mauston, Friendship and Milwaukee (in the second). Both by way of research and travel, I discovered many things about a place I thought I knew much better. I hope you, too, learn a lot about my home state, as you listen to folks giving their take on the most interesting election of my lifetime. With the Democrats bringing their convention to Milwaukee in 2020, the interest can only continue to grow, and all eyes will be set on Wisconsin as one of a handful of important swing states.

Bryan Oldenburg began Radio Broadcasting right out of Beloit College, then entered the world of Television Commercials about ten years after that. His latest foray into Documentary Filmmaking started roughly 8 years ago with THE MINDSET MOVIE, which told the story of The Beloit College Mindset List (a chronicle of Freshman thinking throughout the decades). In SWING STATE, he teams up with veteran cinematographer, Dan Klopp, of both Milwaukee and Madison notoriety, plus welcomes in master musician, Ryan Thomas Becker, who won “Best Guitarist in Texas” a few years ago (no small accomplishment). Award-winning Associate Producer, Jim Peterson (THE YUPPIE, DARKWING DUCK, KIM POSSIBLE, etc.) comes onboard yet again to offer his brilliant insights in SWING STATE— an endeavor that is likely to become a 3-Part series, once the Democrats bring their convention to Milwaukee.

Bryan’s first BIFF screening was the prequel edition to this season’s film by the same name. That first film, Swing State – Election 2016 and 2020 to come  generated strong audience attendance. This season’s film continues the theme where the 2019 film leaves off.

In the first film, Bryan had travelled to Beloit, Baraboo, Madison, Fond du Lac and Ripon, and continues the journey by hitting five more communities (including Wisconsin’s largest, Milwaukee) in the sequel. He asks this year’s show-goers to consider whether a third part (filmed in Northern Wisconsin) would be an interesting prospect for them or not. Many people today seem burned out with increasingly hyper-polarized politics, but future Wisconsinites might find a three-part series more exhaustive and helpful for historical reflection.

BIFF Sing-A-Long

If you have ever found yourself humming or singing one of those “earworms,” those catchy songs from one of those zany 1960s era sitcoms, you do not want to miss this year’s Beloit International Film Festival Sing Along!

It will be a true blast from the past. The audience will get a chance to relive some warm, wild and memorable moments provided by that OTHER “Fab Four”….The Monkees!

And singing along is only a part of the fun. The Castle production staff has a show in store that is full of surprises and live entertainment that will rival the silver screen.

According to BIFF Executive Director Greg Gerard, “this is going to be a big evening. The Wittnebels (owner/operators of The Castle) have promised an even bigger production than their memorable BIFF2020 presentation of The Blues Brothers, when audiences got to dance, sing and engage Elwood and Jake. This will be a musical experience not to be missed.”

Guests are encouraged to come in 60s era pop icon costumes and vie for contest prizes.

The Sing Along, sponsored by Beloit Health System, is a highlight of each BIFF. This year it will offer a live and onscreen musical tour de force, presented in The Castle’s acoustically and visually exciting theater. Family-friendly songs will be led by seasoned professionals as the movie, Daydream Believers: The Monkees’ Story, rolls on the big screen.

Selections will include all of those iconic Monkees classic hits, like Daydream Believer, Last Train to Clarksville, and I’m A Believer.

A cash bar with snacks for purchase will be available throughout the evening.

Seating is limited, so BIFF encourages you to buy advance sale tickets soon.

The BIFF Experience

Filmmakers Attending

Sure, we can all enjoy great film at the theater, at home, on our computers and mobile devices. Where though do we get the opportunity to actually meet and speak with the filmmakers about the film we’ve just experienced together? For most of us, much our film experience is often solitary and passive. But not here.

Here at BIFF, it’s a shared experience with other audience members and frequently with attending filmmakers. How cool is that? It’s one of the very best aspects of the Beloit International Film Festival experience.

And our guest filmmakers? BIFF is routinely complemented for its smart and engaged audiences. That’s you!
You’re a big part of why filmmakers particularly enjoy screening their films at BIFF.

See “Filmmaker Attending” below for which films will have filmmakers in town. Be sure to stick around for the Q&A following the screening. You’re in for a special treat.

Wisconsin / Illinois Showdown

Wisconsin / Illinois Showdown

BIFF 2022 Selections

WI-IL Showdown | Beloit International Film FestivalThe annual Showdown, offers an opportunity for film fans to discover the Lucas or Scorcese of the future. Films include features, documentaries and shorts. Most of the films are from the Milwaukee and Chicago areas but there is always outstanding representation from other communities. And audiences get a chance to show their support by voting.

The
Wisconsin – Illinois
Showdown

Filmmakers from both states compete for Audience Choice awards!

BIFF 2020 will celebrate it’s seventh annual Wisconsin – Illinois Showdown featuring filmmakers from across both states during the first weekend of BIFF with three days of films in-competition.

Filmmaking isn’t just for Hollywood anymore. For fifteen years now, the Beloit International Film Festival has shown our community the power of independent and internationally made films. Many of these films in the past have come from communities just a drive away from our own, dazzling us with Hollywood-quality productions and unique regional flavor. BIFF felt it needed to expand this trend into a full-on weekend showcasing the great caliber of work made on the Third Coast!

When audiences walk into each Wisconsin-Illinois Showdown screening, they are given ballots to vote on what they believe are the best films, eventually awarding filmmakers much-deserved recognition.
