Far From the Castle

Directed by Julia Jansch
Narrative Short
South Africa | 16 min | 2020

On drought-ridden Southernmost tip of Africa, Eliza taps into her divine heritage to search for water. A mile away, the roaming Rotterdams have recently arrived in the region, only to set off again in search of a solution to the dwindling water reserves on the farm. They leave their only son, Maddox, behind. Now alone and free to preoccupy himself with his own time and ghastly imagination, Maddox stumbles upon Eliza searching for fresh water. She might just be the one to quench his thirst. Far from the Castle is a psycho-sexual fable warning us that while water owes nothing to nobody, it still speaks louder than words.

Signing on to direct this film was an easy “yes” for me. The team behind this female written, directed, and produced short film set out to create a story on screen that reflects the diverse world we live in, while staying true to our comedic roots. The comedic timing each performer brought to set was just *chef’s kiss.* And we are proud our cast and crew represent a variety of individual backgrounds, including African American, Middle Eastern, LGBTQ, Latinx, and Asian.

A man struggles to get the woman he loves off his mind.

The moderated Q&A session with filmmakers from:

In These Parts - Poster

A collaboration of neighbours. When I moved to Los Angeles to advance my film career I said to myself “I want to meet people to collaborate with”. I didn’t imagine that meant I would find nearly an entire film production team in my neighbours. A writer/producer, actors, sound crew, camera assistant and grips… we came together from our seven apartments into one for a night of filmmaking. This is the result.

Ryan’s script of a man’s decent into his own dangerous obsessions was exciting to me. I wanted to find a way to use sound design and disjointed visual moments to help the audience feel his struggle and experience what is happening in his head on the regular.

In These Parts - Gavin Michael BoothGavin Michael Booth
Director

Gavin Booth is a Canadian filmmaker. He works as a writer, director, producer and editor. Booth broke new filmmaking ground teaming up with producer Jason Blum (The Purge, Get Out) to create “Blumhouse’s Fifteen”, the world’s first movie broadcast live using Twitter’s Periscope App. He also directed the Canadian horror film, “The Scarehouse” (NBCUniversal / D Films) The Scarehouse is available on streaming worldwide.

Booth’s latest feature, the Canadian drama “Last Call”, is a split screen real-time feature film. No hidden cuts as the film plays out with two camera crews in different parts of a city, showing two sides of a story unfold in real-time. Last Call has won awards at 25 international film festivals. Last Call was independently funded.

“Every once in a while a movie can strike an emotional chord so strongly it cannot…. and will not be ignored. Last Call is one of those movies.” – OC Movie Reviews.

Gavin is also the director and producer of festival favourite shorts such as: “Are You My Mommy” and “To Hell, With Love”. In October he self-financed the feature film “Primary”, a science-fiction music hybrid film that was shot in 13 cities across Canada and is currently in post-production.

Booth was recently nominated in Canada for 2 Music Video of the Year awards. Booth has worked with some of the top entertainers in the music industry including music video and documentary projects for Third Eye Blind, Vanessa Carlton, Our Lady Peace and more, including many FACTOR and MuchFACT grant projects. Gavin has produced and directed over 150 music videos. Recently, his video for SYML “Where’s My Love” crossed 50 million views.

I am a child of war. I escaped Vietnam when I was 12 years old, days before the fall of Saigon, and went to the US. I remember watching the news and seeing tanks roll into the Presidential Palace. I didn’t understand a single word of what the reporter was saying, but I remember in my heart knowing that I had lost my homeland. Although my body was never damaged by mortars, shrapnel or bullets, I was wounded by that war.

A few years ago I met Dave Hansen, a medevac helicopter pilot, who has spent the last several years seeking reconciliation with former enemies through the creation of a peace garden at Khe Sanh, the very place his unit was stationed during the war.

During a visit to the peace garden site I met veterans from both sides of the conflict. As I walked the Khe Sanh battlefield a whole gamut of emotions ran through me, from being a child of war to being a wounded adult to profound sympathy for the lonely souls still haunting this battlefield. I felt a deep sadness no amount of tears can fully express.

Dave is now in the final stages of his life. I made The Khe Sanh Peace Garden as a film tribute to my friend and in hopes of healing the hearts of many victims of this great tragedy.

Rent Do

Directed by Gavin Michael Booth
Narrative Short
Canada| 15 min | 2020

Rent Do follows Rich, Winnie and Pete, roommates and reluctant best friends. When each one is unceremoniously fired on the same day, they’re forced to start job hunting. But after Winnifred takes matters into her own hands, all three are forced into hiding. Paying rent becomes the least of their concerns.

Rent Do - Poster

Everything you do in the film industry leads to your next project… all roads lead to future collaborations… or so they say. “Rent Do” is exactly that and more. I met writer/producer/actor Jonathan Dubsky on my feature film “The Scarehouse”. He had a small part in that film but we became friends and loved discussing cinema. Jonathan switched from acting to crew on a music video that I directed that starred Sarah Booth (also in The Scarehouse). I’ve heard Jonathan’s ideas for shorts and television shows over the years and liked what he was creating. It was great to see Jonathan spend more time turning from actor to actor/creator (along with Daniel), which I believe is crucial; for actors to put themselves and their abilities out into the world. I was thrilled to be asked to direct “Rent Do”. I don’t get to do a lot in the comedy world, I’m known as the “horror” or the “heartbreak” guy. BUT I love comedy and what better way to flex those creative muscles than with a short! They also asked Sarah to star alongside the two of them. A match made in heaven – a casting trifecta I knew would be fantastic. Then we were able to round out the cast with Montreal’s best and brightest film and tv characters actors – a real treat.
There is a lot I could say about the production of the film but I feel like these are things everyone has to say about the creation of their baby. I think I’d rather spend the remainder of this note speaking to the heart of collaboration and working amongst friends. Talented folks in all departments from my frequent cinematographer, Karl Janisse to my one and only composer Adrian Ellis joined us for “Rent Do”. I strive to create projects with people who carry no ego, want to do the work and always go the extra mile. I want to create projects where, budget be damned, it is going to happen and it is an all hands on deck collaboration. “Rent Do” is just that – the film will speak for itself with your programmers, however, the experience of making it was a fantastic one. Jonathan and Daniel will be credited writers and producers you see in theaters and on television in the near future, this project is only the beginning. My direction is just one small part of the team and world they created for me to play with. We look forward to seeing how “Rent Do” plays for the audience it was made for.

Sincerely,

Gavin Booth
