Designing The World Of Film

A tete-a-tete between Independent Film Production Designers

Long-time collaborators Kara Mulrooney and Amanda Tollefson share about their Work-In-Progress The Woman Inside Me (Working Title), a feature film with both historically-based and otherworldly design elements.

In this virtual event, the filmmakers will reveal their process in all things set dressing, costume designing, prop fashioning, and color palating.

Consider this an all-access peek into feature film production design – your chance to learn from our very own BIFF alumnae and darlings of Wisconsin filmmaking.

About The Film

The Woman Inside Me is a feature film directed by (and starring!) Kara Mulrooney + art directed by Amanda Tollefson.

Currently mid-production in Milwaukee, WI, the film alternates between present day and the WWII era, each period experiencing a strange emotional convergence until one character’s supplies in a concealed bunker go short, and the other character’s pregnancy goes long… The director, Kara Mulrooney, also featured her own pregnancy in this film – which might be considered the most dedicated a filmmaker can get.

Fun Fact #368: “The Woman Inside Me” is partially inspired by Tollefson’s real-life stint making mascot costumes.

Logline: A Japanese-American radio operator forced into hiding during WWII accidentally time travels into a contemporary American woman’s womb.

Synopsis:

Drifter Frank Chambers arrives at a quiet California roadside restaurant where he meets and falls for drop-dead gorgeous Cora, the wife of restaurant owner Nick Smith.

After weaseling his way into a job, the two begin a deadly love affair and cook up plans to end her marriage and start a new life together. After a few botched attempts at a clean break, they are forced to put their honeymoon on hold after being rerouted into the arms of a D.A. hot to convict and a corrupt lawyer with designs on Cora.

Frank and Cora thought they packed just enough luck to avoid what should be unavoidable but the duo failed to account for the possible intervention of a formidable force that doesn’t need a badge.

Film trailers are the perfect vehicle for their intended purpose, introducing the film in as compelling means possible and to encourage attendance.

We invite our filmmakers to provide first-person Filmmaker Introductions. These are certainly intended to help encourage attendance as well however, we’re also trying to foster greater person-to-person connection between our guest filmmakers and our BIFF audiences.

We really appreciate getting to know the BIFF filmmakers. And we enjoy a little more insight into the the why of the film and the filmmaker’s intent and connection with their project. We find the Filmmaker Introductions particularly compelling and personable. We offer these to you in the hopes you might as well.

Our BIFF 2019 Honorary Chair

Tommy Hankins

Tom, or Tommy as he is affectionately known to his many friends, has operated Suds O’Hanahan’s Irish Pub in downtown Beloit for more than twenty years. Opening any business downtown was something of a risk back then as the renaissance that would transform Beloit was still a few years away. Tommy’s foresight in locating this popular pub in the heart of Beloit’s business district helped launch that revival and it’s a credit to his vision that Suds O’Hanahan’s endures.

The BIFF 2019
Power of Film Award

After that first BIFF event in 2006 we realized that we had unleashed something truly significant. As you well know, film can be a potent force. It can make people laugh, it can make people cry. It can touch them deep inside and make them look at the world in a whole new light.

As its name suggests, this award was created to spotlight that awesome power. It is given to a film that shares with the world a powerful, life-changing message. The winner this year absolutely fits this description.

Josh Burton Award
For Creative Excellence

A very special friend of BIFF was Josh Burton, who we lost in 2007. As a professional actor, Josh had a successful career on Broadway but returned home to become a driving force in the Greater Beloit arts community. He entertained countless local audiences both as an actor and as a producer as he helped create a professional summer theater company in residence at Beloit College.

In that spirit, the Josh Burton Award acknowledges a film deserving of recognition for bringing something truly special to the stage, or in this case, the screen.
